@texaseatsfirst has built her entire brand around discovery. Finding the thing that has never been done here before, showing up for the opening, and telling her audience before anyone else does. She has a particular radar for Houston firsts: the concept that exists nowhere else in the city, the format that has never been tried here before, the restaurant that arrived from somewhere and changed the conversation. Use this guide to find things only Houston has. 1) The Fastest Omakase on Earth: Sushi by Hidden Ten seats. Twelve courses. Thirty minutes. Sushi by Hidden at 5216 Morningside Drive in Rice Village is the fastest omakase in Houston and possibly the smallest restaurant in Texas. Created by Hidden Omakase founders Tuan and Thy Tran and led by chef Marcos Juarez, the concept distills the omakase experience to its most essential form. Walk through an NFT art gallery. Find the hidden door behind the largest painting. Reservations through Resy, released two weeks in advance at noon. 2) Houston's First Omakase All-You-Can-Eat: Ichijiku Ichijiku at 9393 Bellaire Boulevard merged two formats that should not coexist and made it work: a curated five-course omakase opening, then 100 minutes of unlimited high-quality nigiri. Every piece prepared by a Japanese chef with freshly shaved wasabi. The Houston Chronicle named it one of the best sushi restaurants in the city. @texaseatsfirst covered it as a genuine first. 3) The Yemeni-Mexican Bakery: Yemex Yemex Bakehouse at 18006 Park Row Boulevard in Katy was founded by Rawan Alsagheer and Efrain Ayllon — she is Yemeni, he is Mexican, and they met at the United Airlines downtown office when she spilled coffee in front of him. They left software engineering and UX design careers, built out the space with their own savings, and opened a fully halal bakery whose name combines both cultures. Basil conchas, café de olla rolls, tomato-feta-za'atar Danishes, and beef chorizo pinwheels made from scratch. A concept that exists nowhere else in the world. 4) Houston's First Mediterranean BBQ: Levant Levant BBQ at 5884 Westheimer is the first Mediterranean BBQ restaurant in Houston and one of the most significant new concepts in Texas. Syrian-born founder Mohamad Kharboutli applies Aleppo pepper, cardamom, and pomegranate molasses to Central Texas BBQ smoked over post oak. The pitmaster placed 10th out of 250 at the Houston Rodeo brisket contest. Fully halal. The free soft serve machine at the end of the service line surprises every first-time visitor. 5) The Michelin Star BBQ: CorkScrew An AT&T lineman starts smoking meat in his backyard. Word spreads. A trailer follows. Then a brick-and-mortar in Old Town Spring. Then a Michelin star in 2024 — one of only four American-style barbecue restaurants in the world to earn one. @texaseatsfirst covers it as a Michelin star BBQ right outside Houston. Arrive before 11 AM. The kitchen sells out. Wednesday through Saturday only. 6) The Coolest Speakeasy Entrance: Emilia's Havana Emilia's Havana at 1800 Post Oak Boulevard Suite 6170 is a 1950s Cuban cocktail lounge hidden behind a working kitchen counter. @texaseatsfirst calls it the most impressive speakeasy entrance in Houston. The door is a kitchen counter. What is on the other side is a full Cuban bar and food program that reflects genuine culture rather than a themed aesthetic with generic drinks. 7)The Members-Only Speakeasy Inside the Restaurant: Toca Madera Toca Madera at 1755 Allen Parkway is already one of Houston's most visually striking restaurants — a Noble 33 Hospitality Group modern Mexican steakhouse. What @texaseatsfirst documents is the part most diners never see: a members-only speakeasy concealed behind a mirrored hallway. Annual members only. A bar inside a restaurant inside an itinerary. 8) The Supernatural Dessert Arcade: Popfancy Dessert Bar Popfancy at 9393 Bellaire Boulevard Suite A6 launched a retro 1980s sci-fi theme with moody lighting, colorful waffles, over-the-top milkshakes, and interactive gaming elements inside a dessert bar. @texaseatsfirst calls it a concept that clearly understands how to create a visually immersive experience. Houston's only dessert arcade. 9) The Robot Chef Restaurant: iWok iWok is Houston's first restaurant where the kitchen is robotic. Chinese comfort dishes freshly prepped by hand, then cooked to order by robotic woks programmed from a master chef's recipe. A robot boba machine assembles your drink in front of you. @texaseatsfirst says Houston has officially arrived in the future. Expanding from the Medical Center to Katy, Chinatown, and NASA. 10) The Immersive World You Cannot Describe: Meow Wolf Meow Wolf at 2103 Lyons Avenue in EaDo is 85-plus interconnected rooms, hidden doors, crawl-through portals, and a completely distinct storyline from the Dallas Fort Worth location. @texaseatsfirst calls it Houston's most creative indoor playground. There is a hidden dive bar inside. There is no time limit. You will find things on the third visit that you missed on the first two.
