Experience the Heart of South Asian Culture in Houston’s Mahatma Gandhi District
Details
There is a stretch of southwest Houston where you can spend an entire Saturday without running out of things to eat, buy, or discover, and most people who grew up in this city still have not fully explored it. The Mahatma Gandhi District, also known as Little India and colloquially as Hillcroft, runs along Hillcroft Avenue between the Southwest Freeway and the Westpark Tollway. It is the unofficial capital of South Asian life in Texas, and it has been for over four decades. The story starts in 1983 when Rupa Vyas moved her Indian grocery store, Jay Stores, from Rice Village to the Hillcroft area. Two years later, the Gahunia family opened Raja Sweets. Within a few years, more businesses followed, and the strip of strip malls along Hillcroft began to transform into what it is today: the most concentrated South Asian commercial corridor in the American South. Today the Mahatma Gandhi District is the epicenter of Indian culture for locals in the greater Houston area.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND HERE: The district's commercial density is its superpower. Within a few blocks you can move between Pakistani kebab houses, South Indian vegetarian restaurants, sari boutiques, gold jewelry shops, Indian grocery stores with fresh produce and imported snacks, and sweets counters stacked high with gulab jamun, jalebi, and burfi. One thing to know before you go: many restaurants in the district are closed on Tuesdays. The tradition reportedly started when Raja Sweets took Tuesdays off, and neighboring businesses followed. Plan accordingly.
WHERE TO EAT: 1) Raja Sweets at 5667 Hillcroft Avenue has been here since 1985 and is the original. The lunch and dinner steam tables are loaded with curries, lentils, and naan, and the dessert counter is the reason people keep coming. Owner Sharan Gahunia, second generation, makes the gulab jamun and Chenna Juli from scratch the same way her family always has. 2) Himalaya Restaurant at 6652 Southwest Freeway is where Chef Kaiser Lashkari has been running one of Houston's most beloved Indo-Pakistani restaurants since 2004. He opened in the district specifically because of the concentration of South Asian culture already there. The menu covers curries from Hyderabad, Bombay, Punjab, and Peshawar alongside unexpected fusions: Indian-spiced Southern fried chicken, Indian quesadillas, and Pakistani pastrami that earned visits from both Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. The mango tres leches is not to be skipped. BYOB and closed Mondays. 3) Aga's Restaurant on Hillcroft draws consistent crowds for its staggering selection of kebabs, sizzling barbecue platters, beef and chicken curries, and goat chops, and the service holds up no matter how packed the room gets. 4) Shandez Persian Grill at 2691 Wilcrest Drive is led by Chef Iman, whose charcoal grill produces koobideh, chenjeh, and chicken sultani with the kind of smokiness you only get from real charcoal heat. The tahdig, the crispy saffron crust at the bottom of the rice pot, is the thing Persian food regulars always ask about first. 5) Reza Persian Grill at 5714 Hillcroft is halal and known for its beef koobideh, lamb shank, and saffron-cranberry rice, with three dining areas and outdoor seating. 6) Garson Restaurant at 2926 Hillcroft covers Persian and Mediterranean alongside the South Asian options in the corridor, a reliable daily option that has been part of the district's fabric for years.
WHERE TO SHOP: The district's shopping is as serious as the food. The strip malls along Hillcroft and Harwin Drive carry saris, gold jewelry, imported fabrics, and specialty goods that serve the South Asian community's needs for everything from daily groceries to wedding attire. India Grocers is the kind of full-scale South Asian grocery store where you can find imported spices, fresh produce, sweets, and specialty ingredients not available in standard grocery chains. Karat 22 is a gold jewelry retailer in the district specializing in 22-karat gold pieces, the standard for South Asian jewelry, and custom work for weddings and celebrations.
STOP BY THE ETERAL GANDHI MUSEUM: The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston opened in August 2023 and is the only free-standing museum in the Americas dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. It sits within the district and offers an immersive look at Gandhi's life, philosophy, and global legacy. Free admission.
PLAN YOUR VISIT: The district is at its most alive on weekend afternoons. Come hungry, bring cash as a backup for vendors who may not take card, and build in time to wander. The strip malls are denser with discovery than they look from the outside. Location: Hillcroft Avenue between Southwest Freeway (US-59) and Westpark Tollway, Houston, TX 77081
