Southwest District

About

Southwest District

The most diverse ten square miles in America. If Houston is one of the most international cities in the U.S., the Southwest District is where that claim gets made real. Over 126 languages spoken inside its boundaries. Six distinct zones, each with its own flavor, its own food court, its own reason to come back. A population that reflects Latin America, East Asia, South Asia, West Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean — sometimes on the same block. You can leave Houston without ever leaving Houston. That's the district in one sentence. Most visitors stick to one Chinatown trip and call it a day. We're asking you to stay longer. There's a version of the world tucked into the Southwest District that you genuinely can't find anywhere else in America, and the locals here have been inviting you for decades. You just had to know where to look.

Liberty Fest 2026

Southwest Houston's biggest Independence Day celebration returns Sunday, June 28, 2026, taking over the PlazAmericas Mall parking lot at 7500 Bellaire Boulevard for the kind of festivities only this district can throw. Hosted by the Southwest Management District, Liberty Fest is a free, family-friendly event where Houston's global cultures take center stage and the community comes together to honor the red, white, and blue in the most Houston way possible. This year's headliner sets the tone: Houston's own Paul Wall, the Ice Man himself, taking the main stage to remind everyone whose city this really is. Joining the lineup is a high-energy tribute to Shakira, bringing the hips, the hits, and a whole lot of Latin flavor to Bellaire Boulevard. The fun starts at 4 PM with a program that moves through tradition, rhythm, and pure Houston energy. Catch the East West Band opening the day, MECA Ballet Folklorico bringing the color, Mariachi Perla Tapatia carrying the heritage, Lee's Golden Lions roaring to life, and the Texas Brass Ensemble sending it sky-high. Kids get their own stage with magicians, jugglers, and clowns from 4:30 PM on, and the whole night closes with a synchronized fireworks finale at 9 PM that paints the Southwest Houston sky red, white, blue, and unforgettable. Food vendors, cultural performances, neighborhood pride, and one of the best free firework shows in the city. This is Liberty Fest, and this is how Southwest Houston celebrates America.
